Last week we had the opportunity to visit the Weed Maps Museum of Weed. The museum had numerous exhibits ranging from historical, advocacy, and educational.

If you are an avid visitor of dispensaries, or have ever looked up the location to one, you may be familiar with the Weedmaps website popping up in your google search. For those of you who are not as familiar, Weedmaps is a cannabis industry technology company that operates one of the largest map-based repositories for dispensary locations and strain information. Think google maps, but for dispensaries. If that doesn’t impress you though, perhaps this will: on August 3rd, Weedmaps launched the Museum of Weed, an installation dedicated to exhibiting the history of the plant and how far it has come in the last two millennia. Members of the Papa & Barkley marketing team had the chance to visit the museum last week and the experience was one of a kind.

The Museum: History, Advocacy & Science

The Weedmaps Museum of Weed takes visitors through the history of cannabis and time periods where it has been consumed. It features 30,000 square feet of seven immersive exhibits, interactive art installations, artifacts, a Plant Lab, as well as amenities such as a full cafeteria, gift shop, snack/coffee bar, and plenty of interior and exterior spaces to snap a great selfie. The museum tells an extensive and honest look at the story of cannabis.

Displayed throughout the exhibits were hundreds of years of propaganda and perspectives such as the infamous ‘Just Say No’ campaign and the emergence of the War on Drugs. There are sobering moments when viewing how prohibition created fear-mongering, devastating misinformation and propaganda, as well as how rhetoric twisted public perceptions about cannabis. Coupled with the history of the plant, the propaganda, and demonization throughout the decades, we noticed how the museum challenged stigmatization and celebrated legalization and the advances of the last decade as well as the counterculture of the 60’s and 70’s.

Our Experience Visiting the Museum

Last Friday our team experienced all of the exhibits. Throughout our visit, the museum provided a balance of education and thought-provoking installations. The art and culture surrounding the plant is celebrated extensively, and gives people a one of a kind experience. Weedmaps has created an interactive museum that shares a wealth of in-depth information covering cannabis culture, science, and medicine.


In short, if you are looking for a great experience in Los Angeles, the Weedmaps Museum of Weed shouldn’t be missed. The museum will be open for a limited time, closing Sept. 29, 2019 so you’ll need to act fast. Also, look for some Papa & Barkley products in the last exhibit in the plant lab!
