I remember when I was a young man how important it was for me to perform as an athlete. I played on a football team as a defensive linemen. I was 6’1” and weighed a whopping 240 lbs.— I was a natural fit on the team. During the season, about 4 games in, I received a nasty broken ankle. The injury left me off the field and on the bench for the remainder of the season. I can’t begin to tell you the humiliation I suffered going from the first string to backbench but I can tell you that the road to recovery was the hardest to bear. 6 weeks in a cast and then another two months of recovery using ice and heat. At the time I didn’t have access to legally consume CBD. But for most professional and amateur athletes, CBD is now a viable option to help with recovery from a sports injury.
Physical Therapy and Sports Injuries
The worst news an athlete or sports professional can get is that they will not be able to play in the game or perform their sport because of a physical limitation because of a sports-related injury. But modern sports medicine and physical therapy have developed where athletes can stay in peak performance ability and recover in a healthy and better way than ever before.
A study by the CDC has shown that sports and recreational sports related injury are on the rise: An average annual estimate of 8.6 million sports- and recreation-related injury episodes was reported, with an age-adjusted rate of 34.1 per 1,000 population. Sprains and strains accounted for the largest portion of injury types, at 41.4 per 1,000. Fractures, at 20 per 1,000, were next, followed by contusions (19), open wound (10), traumatic brain injury (4.5), and dislocation (2.9).
Physical therapy helps people rebuild strength and movement in parts of their body after an injury. Therapy can also help someone manage pain and prevent permanent damage and recurring problems. This is especially important for athletes and individuals who practice sports on a regular basis. Sports injuries can be mitigated with physical therapy, taking the time to recover properly, and adding CBD.
How to Use CBD for Sports Injury Recovery
Adding CBD to your physical therapy routine is a great method to combat pain and recover from a sports injury. By targeting the injury and focusing your PT on mobility and exercise to strengthen the affected area, CBD can help a recovering athlete get back on the field or into the gym by targeting pain where it occurs in the body and relieve inflammation.
The Health Benefits of CBD
- All natural pain relief
- Aids in healthy sleep
- Reduces stress
- Non-intoxicating and non-habit forming
- Reduces inflammation
- Reduces pains and aches
How CBD Works in the Body
CBD acts on the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) in our bodies. When ingested orally, used topically, or applied transdermally CBD interacts with the two primary receptors (CB1 & CB2) in the ECS. By stimulating the ECS, CBD promotes homeostasis, reduces pain sensations, and decreases inflammation.
How to Take CBD for Injuries
There are three main delivery methods when taking CBD: sublingually under the tongue, topically to target specific areas of pain, or consumed by ingestion. Each method is as viable as the next and depends on the athlete’s preference. CBD tinctures, such as Papa & Barkley’s Hemp Drops, are easy to take and are active for several hours when taken under the tongue. If you prefer an on-the-go option CBD capsules like Papa & Barkley’s Hemp Capsules are a great choice. The benefit of capsules are that they offer whole body pain and inflammation relief through a precise dose. Although the best choice for athletes are CBD topicals, like Papa & Barkley’s Hemp Balm. Because injuries usually occur in specific areas, a CBD balm can target pain precisely where it occurs.
Find a Licensed Physical Therapist Near You
If you or a loved one are in pain or suffer from chronic pain or injury then perhaps it is time to look for a physical therapist to help you with recovery. The American Physical Therapy Association has an amazing directory tool that you can search for PT’s near you. Just input your city or zip code and recommendations with more information are shown. All the physical therapists on the directory are licensed and actively practicing.
I never had the benefits of safe access to CBD when I was younger, but I do currently take CBD for a back injury I sustained when working out. Being able to recover and be at peak performance is important for an athlete, but having the peace of mind that your body will be back to 100% as soon as possible is priceless. Take it from a fellow athlete, If you are suffering from a sports injury, CBD and physical therapy can make all the difference in getting back on the field, court, or track. CBD can reduce recovery time, reduce inflammation, and pain relief.
