Terms to be familiar with:
Kief: The accumulation of dried and cured cannabis resin glands (trichomes) after being tumbled or sifted
Cannabis Resin : The alternative name for the trichomes on the plant.
Rosin : Concentrate oil when cannabis trichomes are pressed using heat and pressure, solventless.
Live Resin: Concentrate made through chemical extraction, such as BHO or CO2 and then filtered through solvents.
What is cannabis rosin? Rosin is a golden, sap-like concentrated oil made by pressing the resinous trichome heads from the flowers of cannabis plants.
While you may not have heard of it, rosin is an oil you didn’t know your skin needed. If you’ve never heard of the golden sap-like substance that is front and center in our skincare suite, here’s a 101 on where it comes from, how we make it, the difference between rosin and resin, and how it helps keep your skin glowing all year long.
Here at Papa & Barkley, we think rosin is pretty cool. Rosin isn’t an ordinary oil – it’s made from the trichomes of the cannabis plant – the fruit of the flower. Trichomes produce THC, CBD, and other medicinal cannabinoids, which is what makes rosin an integral part of our Releaf Repair Cream and Releaf Body Lotion.
But Where Does Rosin Come From? Trichomes.
It’s all about trichomes, baby! To understand what rosin is, we first have to talk about trichomes. Take a good, long look at a cannabis plant – see image below – and gaze upon the tiny, white, bead-like hairs on the flowers known as trichomes.
Trichomes are the resinous limbs that occur on the flowers naturally as they grow. Trichomes are where the cannabinoids, terpenes, and other natural nutrients are stored, and that is why they are vital to the creation of rosin. To create rosin, we use a solventless process to collect trichomes (called kief) en masse and then press the flowers into a fine oil; this golden oil is then used in our formulation.
What’s the difference between rosin and resin?
We know, “rosin” and “resin” sound like the same thing, which makes it all too easy to confuse them. Here is the main difference: Cannabis resin are the trichomes on the plant (the frosty beads). Rosin is a concentrated oil that is obtained by pressing trichomes with heat and pressure without the use of solvents whereas, Live Resin is made through cryogenic freezing, then chemical extraction processing such as BHO or CO2, and filtered through solvents.
Now that we’ve explained the difference, here’s why rosin is our skincare game-changer.
Whole plant rosin is more effective.
Whole plant equals a whole lot of benefits. In skincare products, a majority of the industry relies upon distillates or isolates in their products. In the spirit of clean beauty, we decided to do something more natural, cleaner, and significantly more powerful for our skincare line. Infused with fresh-pressed rosin, our products provide the benefits of cannabinoids, terpenes, chlorophyll, and other vital phytonutrients straight into your skin (we dare you to say vital phytonutrients 10x fast). Rosin is a natural anti-inflammatory – so it may help with redness, alleviate minor conditions, and help soothe dry or cracked skin.
Plant Medicine For Your Skin
What is our solventless rosin process?
Like your farmer’s market orange juice, our rosin is fresh-squeezed. Well, fresh-pressed, but you get the analogy. We press cannabis flowers between two heated metal plates, which produces a concentrated oil similar to tree sap – here’s our proprietary solventless process:
That’s it. We don’t use chemical solvents, and you receive the entire essence of the whole plant. That’s clean skincare for you.
Cannabis for better, smoother skin.
If you couldn’t tell, we love fresh-pressed rosin – think of it like a superfood for your skin. With it’s skin-soothing properties make, rosin is an ideal addition to your daily skincare routine. For those of you with skin conditions or year-round dryness, we recommend our Releaf Repair Cream for your face and neck. And if you deal with chronic flaky skin, we can’t live without our Releaf Body Lotion – it soothes, moisturizes, and repairs to give you whole body hydration.
