What is Self Care? 

In the last few years, the term “self care” has been hot on everyone’s lips – and for good reason! There’s been a lot going on in our world, which is making us turn inward and find ways to feel better and focus on our physical and mental health and well-being. We know it’s easy to neglect yourself, but as the flight attendants say, “Put on your oxygen mask first before helping others.” You can’t be there for your loved ones if you’re not taking care of yourself. Not sure where to start? Here are some of our favorite ways to practice self care. 

Make Yourself a Priority 

It’s never too late to put yourself first and make your mental health a priority. A great step towards self care is to cultivate a healthier mindset and lifestyle and to focus on you. If you have no idea how to do that, the first thing you should do is cut yourself some slack! This bears repeating: CUT YOURSELF SOME SLACK! Life is far too short for sweating the small stuff, so don’t put so much pressure on yourself. Instead, focus on what makes you feel loved and secure. We suggest taking out a sheet of paper and writing a gratitude list. Start with the stuff that is most important to you: family, friends, and loved ones. A healthier attitude is just the beginning, a healthier lifestyle requires a little more action.   

Why You Should Take a Self Care Day 

To us, self care means stopping to take time for yourself and decipher what you need most in that moment. That could be anything from 5 minutes of solitude, to a workout, a laugh over FaceTime with friends, or a healthy snack. While it can be hard to devote a day to self care given our busy lives, everyone can set aside a few minutes throughout the day. It’s important to reset and step away from work, social lives, and responsibilities to take a breath, relax, and reset your mind and body. Self care is vital because it gives you a break, but it can also increase productivity, lower stress, improve brain function, provide alone time, and allow you to be more present with yourself and those around you. Here are a few of our favorite ways to take time for ourselves!
