Learn/Cannabis Tinctures 101: Tips for Getting the Most From Your Tincture
For those of us used to the idea of inhaling cannabis, the idea of taking it in the form of a sublingual tincture might seem a little strange. But it shouldn’t: Here in the United States, cannabis tinctures were a fairly common sight on pharmacy shelves into the early years of the 20th century. And these days, a growing number of us are learning firsthand about the benefits of THC tincture as for aches and pain, stress, sleep issues, and other chronic symptoms and conditions.
If you’re interested in harnessing the power of THC to support your wellness, today’s post is for you. What is a tincture? How does sublingual THC provide symptomatic relief? How do I figure out the right THC tincture dosage? This guide will help you get started on the right foot!
Cannabis Medicine Fundamentals: What Is a Tincture?
A cannabis tincture is nothing more than fresh cannabis flower extracted into a neutral medium such as grain alcohol or an oil. Here at Papa & Barkley, we use a pure coconut-derived oil known as “MCT,” short for “medium-chain triglyceride.” And the cannabis itself comes from our trusted partners in California’s Emerald Triangle: Farmers who share our passion for creating clean, natural, and effective plant medicines.

There’s a lot to appreciate about cannabis tinctures. For one thing, they provide an easy way to get consistent and predictable doses of cannabinoids. They’re shelf-stable, portable and discreet. And for another thing, they don’t introduce any smoke or vapor into our lungs.-na
What’s the best way to take a THC tincture? There is no best way, and in fact tinctures are quite versatile! Some people like to mix them into food or beverages, or simply swallow the cannabis medicine right out of the dropper. When you take cannabis this way, onset typically begins within 45 minutes.
There’s a faster way: The sublingual approach. If you deposit the drops under your tongue and hold them there for at least 20 seconds or so, they’ll be absorbed by the blood vessels there. In this case, onset usually begins within 15 minutes to 30 minutes.
THC Tincture Dosage Guide: Basic Principles
Then there’s the question of dosage: How much tincture should you take? As with all cannabis medicine, the answer comes down to your personal physiology and the specific symptoms or conditions you want to address.
To understand tincture dosage, you need to know how many milligrams of THC are in each bottle and how many servings each bottle contains. For instance, we recommend a dose of a quarter dropperful of 1:3 CBD:THC Releaf Oil. Because each 15 ml bottle contains 450 mg (112.5 mg CBD, 337.5 mg THC) and 15 full droppers, that works out to roughly 7.5 mg (2 mg CBD, 5.5 mg THC) per quarter dropperful.
However, depending on your needs, THC tincture dosages will vary and may take some trial and error to get right for your personal needs and physiology. That’s why we recommend a strategy whereby you start with the minimum dosage recommended on the product, giving your body a few hours to adjust before increasing the dose in small increments until you find the results you’re looking for.
