Here at Papa & Barkley, we’re all about wellness. While we’re big on introducing plants into your daily wellness routine, there are so many (vitally important!) ways to naturally boost your immune system and keep your body in tip-top shape. We wanted to share some of our favorite tips for staying healthy, so you can feel your best every day.
How Does the Immune System Work?
The immune system is our body’s defense against infection, which attacks germs and helps us stay healthy. Our immune system consists of two types of white blood cells – phagocytes and lymphocytes. Phagocytes chew up the attacking organisms, and lymphocytes keep the body in check and remind them to continue to destroy them.
As you can see, humans are born with the tools we need to fight bacteria and sickness. In short, our bodies are pretty cool, and in order to keep our immune system ready for action it’s important to incorporate some daily wellness practices.
How to Boost Your Immune System Naturally
1. Take vitamin C
We all know vitamin C is the ultimate immune-booster, but seriously, it’s a true game-changer. If you’re not an OJ person (sometimes, it’s just too sugary!), a Papa & Barkley office favorite is lemons. When life gives you lemons, make lemon water. Our tip: boil some water, squeeze in a quarter of a lemon, sip, and enjoy.
Another (less popular) way to get your Vitamin C from a lemon? Slice it up, add a dash of salt, and eat it right off the rind! Yeah, we’re serious. It tastes like sour candy and is great for digestion too.
2. Stay hydrated
It sounds simple, but drink water! For those of us who have trouble chugging water every 15 minutes and hate going to the bathroom frequently, it can be a hard task to swallow (seriously), but it’s crucial for your immune system. Being dehydrated is a huge factor when it comes to keeping your immune system healthy and fighting off sickness. While drinking pure water is the best way to do it, you can also drink tea or hot water with lemon. Really, any way you can get some H2O is a win in our books. The Mayo Clinic recommends drinking 11-16 cups of water per day. We know it can be difficult, but a fun way to tackle the challenge might be to get an app on your phone where you can tally your daily glasses or have an accountability buddy to check in with throughout the day.
3. Eat warm foods
Even though we’re always told to eat a bunch of vegetables, namely, salads, when we’re trying to stay healthy, raw veggies, sushi, and sugary foods are not at the top of the list. Instead, warming foods such as soups, rice, quinoa, oatmeal, cooked vegetables, and savory spices like ginger, turmeric, cinnamon will keep your body feeling warm and nourished.
4. Get 8 hours of sleep
We can’t stress this point enough because sleep is one of the most important ways that our bodies recover. Sleep plays a vital role in your health and well-being, and getting enough sleep helps protect your mental and physical health, as well as your quality of life. Each person is different, but on the whole, research recommends adults get 7-8 hours of healthy sleep per day. Studies have shown that taking CBD regularly can aid in more restful sleep, too. 5. Keep your body warm to stave off sickness
A Yale study found that keeping your body warm can prevent the common cold from spreading! One of the easiest ways to keep your body warm is to wear comfy clothing.
